Rice terraces, badly drawn
We spent four days in Ubud and I filled half a sketchbook with rice terraces that all look slightly wrong — the perspective on terraced hills is genuinely hard. My dad got tired of waiting for me at every viewpoint. Worth it anyway; I still go back to those pages when I'm stuck on a painting and need to remember what actual light looks like instead of the light I think I remember.

Everything moves faster than you think
I thought I'd come back with pages of animal studies. I came back with about six finished sketches and forty blurry photos, because it turns out you cannot casually sketch something that might start running at any second. The one drawing that worked — a lioness, half-asleep, ears still tracking something — took me three tries and I'm still not sure I got the ears right.
The light doesn't behave
Iceland was the first trip I did without my family — a small group program the summer before senior year. I went in thinking I'd paint waterfalls and came out mostly painting sky, because at that latitude in August the sky just doesn't stop being interesting. Skógafoss made it into exactly one painting. The clouds made it into eleven.
